More energy#
Active, sporting or working dogs can need noticeably more food than a sedentary dog of the same size, often around 3–4% of body weight daily, depending on the intensity and duration of their exercise.
Energy needs can also change seasonally — a working dog may need more food during an intense training period and less during rest weeks, so it's worth adjusting portions rather than keeping them fixed year-round.
Timing#
Feed at least an hour before or after hard exercise to reduce the risk of digestive upset or, in deep-chested breeds, the more serious risk of bloat.
A small, easily digested snack shortly after intense exercise can help with recovery for some working dogs, though the main meal is usually better timed once they've settled.
Recovery and hydration#
Active dogs need more water as well as more food, especially in warm weather, so make sure fresh water is always available during and after exercise.
Quality protein supports muscle recovery, and moist, fresh meals can help with hydration alongside drinking water for dogs working hard outdoors.
