Start slowly#
Replace about a quarter of the old food with raw for the first two to three days, and watch how your dog copes: stools, energy and appetite all tell you something. Most dogs settle in happily, but a gradual start gives their gut time to adjust to a very different way of eating.
From there, move to half raw, then three quarters, then a full raw bowl over roughly ten days. If your dog is elderly, has a sensitive stomach, or is recovering from illness, stretch this out over two to three weeks instead — there's no prize for rushing it.
Pick a gentle first protein#
Chicken or turkey is easy to digest for most dogs and a sensible place to begin. Keep to one protein for the first two weeks so you have a clear baseline for how your dog responds.
Once things are settled, add new proteins one at a time, leaving a few days between each. This way, if something doesn't agree with your dog, you'll know exactly what caused it rather than guessing.
What's normal#
Smaller, firmer stools are normal on raw, because there's less filler for the body to pass through. A short patch of softer stools during the change is common and usually settles within a few days.
Some dogs also drink slightly less water at first, since raw meals are naturally moist. This is normal and not a cause for concern on its own.
Signs it's working#
Look for steady energy, a good appetite at mealtimes, a glossy coat and stools that are firm, small and easy to pick up. Many owners also notice fresher breath within a few weeks.
Every dog transitions at their own pace, so judge progress over the full ten days rather than day to day.
When to call your vet#
If vomiting or diarrhoea lasts more than a day or two, if your dog seems lethargic, or if they refuse food altogether, pause the transition and speak to your vet before continuing.
This is especially important for puppies, senior dogs, or dogs with an existing health condition, who can dehydrate more quickly.
