Healthy fats#
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, found in fish and quality meats, support the skin barrier and contribute to a glossy, healthy-looking coat over time.
These fats work gradually rather than instantly — most owners notice a difference over several weeks of consistent feeding rather than days.
Protein#
Hair is mostly made of protein, so a diet with good-quality, easily digested protein gives the body the raw materials it needs to keep producing a healthy coat.
A poor-quality or unbalanced diet often shows up first in the coat — dullness, excessive shedding or brittle hair can all be early signs worth paying attention to.
Gentle grooming#
A mild organic shampoo avoids stripping the natural oils that keep skin comfortable and coats glossy. Over-bathing, even with a gentle product, can dry the skin out and undo some of the benefit of a good diet.
Regular brushing between baths also helps distribute natural oils along the coat and gives you a chance to spot any skin changes early.
When to call your vet#
Persistent itching, bald patches, redness, sores or a sudden change in coat quality should be checked by a vet, since these can point to an allergy, parasite or underlying medical issue rather than something diet alone will fix.
Diet can support a healthy coat, but it isn't a substitute for treating an underlying skin condition.
