How often#
Most dogs need a bath roughly every four to eight weeks, or whenever they get genuinely dirty or start to smell. Over-bathing can dry out skin, while under-bathing can allow dirt and oils to build up.
Coat type matters too — dogs with oily or long coats may need baths more often than short, smooth-coated breeds who tend to stay cleaner for longer.
Dry well#
Dry your dog thoroughly after bathing, paying particular attention to skin folds, ears and the areas under the collar, where trapped moisture can encourage skin infections.
Leaving a dog damp, especially one with a thick or double coat, can create the kind of warm, moist environment that skin problems thrive in.
When to call your vet#
Persistent itching, redness, an unpleasant smell that returns quickly after bathing, or sore skin that doesn't settle should be checked by a vet rather than treated with more frequent bathing.
These can be signs of an underlying skin condition or allergy that bathing alone won't resolve.
