Is sweet potato good for dogs?#
Yes, in the right amount. Sweet potato offers a gentle, easily digested source of carbohydrate energy, along with dietary fibre and beta-carotene, which the body can convert to vitamin A.
It's a common choice in balanced dog meals because it provides energy and micronutrients without the gluten found in some grains.
How we use it#
We use organic sweet potato in several of our raw meal recipes as a carbohydrate and fibre component, cooked to make it easier for dogs to digest, and in some of our handmade treats.
It works well alongside a range of proteins and is generally well tolerated even by dogs with sensitive stomachs.
Anything to watch?#
Sweet potato should always be cooked and plain, without added sugar, butter or seasoning, and fed in sensible portions since, like any carbohydrate, too much can contribute to weight gain.
If your dog has diabetes or another condition affected by carbohydrate intake, ask your vet before increasing sweet potato in their diet.
