What does a Poodle need?#
For a medium, high-energy Poodle, the everyday priorities are measured portions, steady condition and careful monitoring of sensitive skin and digestion.
Poodles are sharp, active dogs whose curly coat can trap moisture near the ears and skin, so diet plays a real part in keeping both healthy. Many Poodles also do best with consistent, high-quality feeding rather than frequent food changes, which can upset a sensitive stomach.
How much should they eat?#
As a starting point, adult medium dogs usually eat about 2.5–3% of their ideal body weight per day, split across two meals. This is only a starting point — always adjust by body condition, age and activity rather than sticking rigidly to a number.
Check shape regularly rather than waiting for a weigh-in. Easily felt ribs and a visible waist usually indicate a sensible portion; if not, change the daily amount by a little and monitor the result.
Which ingredients suit them?#
Start with a clearly named animal protein and a balanced recipe, then judge it by digestion, skin, coat and energy rather than by a fashionable ingredient list.
A single-protein meal such as lamb or duck can help if you notice itching or loose stools, and omega-3s support a healthy, curly coat. Stick to one recipe for a few weeks before judging whether it suits your dog.
Signs it's working#
A well-fed Poodle has a soft, curly coat free of flaking, comfortable ears, firm stools, and plenty of alert, playful energy.
Allow two to three settled weeks before assessing a routine, unless a reaction needs quicker attention. A short note of weight, appetite, stools and skin can reveal changes that are easy to miss day to day.
When to call your vet#
Persistent ear redness, scratching, or soft stools that don't improve with a settled diet are worth mentioning to your vet.
Breed tendencies are context, not a diagnosis. If your dog seems unwell, is in pain or changes suddenly, contact your vet rather than trying to solve it through food alone.
