What are the signs?#
A sensitive stomach can show up as excess gas, loose or inconsistent stools, occasional vomiting, or a dog that seems to react to small changes in food or treats.
Some dogs have a sensitive stomach their whole lives and simply do better on consistent, simple meals, while others develop sensitivity later due to age, illness or a change in diet.
How can food help?#
Many dogs are supported by easily digested proteins, gentle fibre sources like pumpkin, and probiotics to help maintain a healthy gut balance.
Consistency matters as much as the ingredients themselves. Sudden changes in food, even to a 'better' option, can unsettle a sensitive stomach, so any change should be introduced gradually over a week or more, mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old.
Smaller, more frequent meals can also help some dogs, particularly those prone to vomiting bile on an empty stomach.
Signs it's working#
Firmer, more consistent stools, less gas, and fewer episodes of vomiting over two to three weeks suggest a dietary change is helping. Keeping a simple food and symptom diary can make patterns easier to spot.
