A Maltese does best when food supports a medium lifestyle without losing sight of tear staining and dental problems, which can matter in this breed.
Maltese dogs are prone to tear staining around the eyes, which can sometimes be linked to diet and food sensitivities as well as tear duct anatomy. Their small mouths also make them prone to dental crowding, so food texture is worth considering.
How much should they eat?#
As a starting point, adult small dogs usually eat about 3–3.5% of their ideal body weight per day, split across two meals. This is only a starting point — always adjust by body condition, age and activity rather than sticking rigidly to a number.
Let your dog's outline guide the final portion. The ribs should be easy to find under a thin layer of fat, with a waist visible from above, and any increase or reduction should be made gradually.
