What does a Chihuahua need?#
Chihuahuas need portions that match a small frame and medium energy level, with particular attention to dental problems and low blood sugar in puppies.
Chihuahuas have tiny mouths and are prone to dental crowding, so texture and kibble size matter as much as ingredients. Puppies of this breed have very small reserves of energy and can be prone to low blood sugar, so regular small meals are especially important early on.
How much should they eat?#
As a starting point, adult small dogs usually eat about 3–3.5% of their ideal body weight per day, split across two meals. This is only a starting point — always adjust by body condition, age and activity rather than sticking rigidly to a number.
Use the rib check alongside the scales: ribs should be easy to feel beneath a light covering, and the waist should be visible from above. If either picture changes, adjust the daily amount in small steps and review again after a week or two.
Which ingredients suit them?#

When to call your vet#
In puppies, weakness, trembling or lethargy can indicate low blood sugar and need urgent vet attention. In adults, bad breath, reluctance to chew or visible tartar are reasons to book a dental check.
If something feels wrong, seek veterinary advice early. A proper examination matters more than adjusting food when a dog is unwell.
