Belgian Malinois are working dogs with exceptionally high drive and energy, often needing considerably more food than a typical large-breed guideline if they're doing real work or intensive training. A less active pet Malinois still needs portions watched carefully.
How much should they eat?#
As a starting point, adult large dogs usually eat about 2–2.5% of their ideal body weight per day, split across two meals. This is only a starting point — always adjust by body condition, age and activity rather than sticking rigidly to a number.
Check shape regularly rather than waiting for a weigh-in. Easily felt ribs and a visible waist usually indicate a sensible portion; if not, change the daily amount by a little and monitor the result.

Allow two to three settled weeks before assessing a routine, unless a reaction needs quicker attention. A short note of weight, appetite, stools and skin can reveal changes that are easy to miss day to day.
When to call your vet#
If your Malinois is losing condition despite eating well, or seems restless and undernourished, talk to your vet about tailoring their intake.
Breed tendencies are context, not a diagnosis. If your dog seems unwell, is in pain or changes suddenly, contact your vet rather than trying to solve it through food alone.
