How do I feed my dog when travelling?

Keep food consistent#

Sudden diet changes can upset a dog's stomach, and travel already brings enough change and stress on its own. Bring their usual food along in a cool bag or suitable container rather than switching to something unfamiliar on the road.

If you know you'll need to change food temporarily, for example due to travel restrictions, try to introduce it gradually beforehand rather than switching abruptly on the day.

Water breaks#

Offer water every couple of hours during travel, and more often in hot weather, since dogs can be reluctant to drink from unfamiliar bowls or in a moving vehicle.

A familiar bowl and a small amount of home water mixed with new water can help encourage a nervous traveller to drink.

Feeding timing#

It's generally sensible to feed a lighter meal a few hours before travel rather than right before setting off, particularly for dogs prone to car sickness.

Stick as closely as possible to normal mealtimes once you arrive, since routine helps dogs settle into a new environment more quickly.
