Fibre#
Plain cooked pumpkin provides soluble fibre that can help firm up loose stools and, in smaller amounts, ease occasional constipation too, making it a genuinely useful ingredient for many digestive niggles.
It's gentle and generally well tolerated, which is part of why it's such a common recommendation for dogs with a mildly upset tummy.
How much#
A general guide is about a teaspoon of plain pumpkin per 5 kg of body weight, mixed into a meal. Avoid spiced pumpkin pie filling, which often contains sugar, nutmeg or other additives that aren't suitable for dogs.
As with any dietary change, introduce it gradually and watch how your dog responds, particularly if their stomach is already sensitive.
When to call your vet#
If digestive upset continues for more than a day or two despite adding pumpkin, or if there are other symptoms like vomiting, lethargy or blood in the stool, see your vet rather than relying on pumpkin alone.
Pumpkin is a helpful supportive ingredient, not a treatment for an underlying digestive condition.
