Size#
Your dog should be able to lie fully stretched out on the bed in at least one direction, with a little extra room to curl up comfortably in another position.
If you're unsure between two sizes, it's usually safer to size up, particularly for growing puppies or breeds prone to joint issues later in life.
Support#
Older dogs and larger breeds benefit from firm, supportive bases such as orthopaedic foam, which cushions joints and is gentler on pressure points than thin padding.
Puppies and smaller dogs often do well with softer, cosier beds, but as dogs age it's worth reassessing whether their bed still gives enough support.
Washable#
Removable, machine-washable covers keep beds fresh and make it far easier to manage shedding, muddy paws and the occasional accident.
Washing bedding regularly also helps reduce allergens and odours, particularly important for dogs with skin sensitivities.
