What does a Pug need?#
Feeding a Pug well starts with their small build and low energy needs, while keeping weight gain and skin folds firmly in view.
Pugs are a brachycephalic breed with a low energy level, which makes weight gain very easy and puts extra strain on their already busy breathing. Their facial skin folds also need attention, since diet-related skin issues can worsen fold irritation.
How much should they eat?#
As a starting point, adult small dogs usually eat about 3–3.5% of their ideal body weight per day, split across two meals. This is only a starting point — always adjust by body condition, age and activity rather than sticking rigidly to a number.
Let your dog's outline guide the final portion. The ribs should be easy to find under a thin layer of fat, with a waist visible from above, and any increase or reduction should be made gradually.
Which ingredients suit them?#
A fresh recipe with a named protein and no unnecessary fillers makes the bowl easier to understand, especially when you are monitoring sensitivities.
Keep portions carefully measured and choose a nutrient-dense diet that doesn't add unnecessary calories. A named, easily digestible protein supports healthy skin and reduces the risk of fold irritation.
Signs it's working#
A healthy Pug has a visible waist, clean and dry skin folds, and comfortable, easy breathing even after light exercise.
Judge the pattern, not a single meal. Track body condition, digestion, appetite and coat for a few weeks so you can separate a lasting improvement from an ordinary good or bad day.
When to call your vet#
If skin folds look red or sore, or your Pug is gaining weight despite a stable diet, see your vet — both are common but manageable in this breed.
Nutrition can support everyday wellbeing, but it cannot diagnose or treat illness. Ask your vet about persistent, worsening or unexplained changes.
