Is turmeric good for dogs?#
In small, correctly prepared amounts, many owners include turmeric as part of their dog's diet. It's a spice that has been studied for its soothing properties, largely thanks to a compound called curcumin.
Curcumin is poorly absorbed on its own, so it's typically combined with a fat source and sometimes black pepper to help the body make use of it, which is why we don't recommend simply sprinkling raw turmeric powder onto food.
How we use it#
Where we use turmeric, it's included in small, considered amounts within a recipe or supplement designed to support absorption, rather than added loose. We treat it as a complementary ingredient, not a substitute for veterinary treatment.
It tends to be included in products aimed at general wellbeing support rather than as a stand-alone product.
Anything to watch?#
Turmeric can stain fur and bedding, and in larger amounts may cause stomach upset. It should be introduced in small amounts and isn't suitable for dogs on certain medications, including some anti-inflammatories or blood thinners, without veterinary advice.
